Celebrating the Brilliance of Award-Winning Filipino Filmmaker Brillante Mendoza

A trailblazer in Philippine cinema, Brillante Ma. Mendoza has made history in 2009 for being the first Filipino to win the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival for his movie “Kinatay”. He is known for his independent films that depict everyday realities and social issues which earned him many awards and nominations, locally and internationally. In Europe, he’s called an “Ultra Neo-Realist” because of his filmmaking style that’s like a documentary. Aside from directing, he is also credited as screenwriter, production designer, and cinematographer in some of his films. Brillante’s notable works throughout his career are “Serbis”, “Lola”, “Thy Womb”, “Captive, “Ma’ Rosa”, and “Gensan Punch”.

In this So Bold segment, we sat down with the award-winning filmmaker to talk about how independent filmmaking has changed from the time that he started, where he gets his stories from and what he looks for in an actor/actress, his take on entering into Hollywood, and his proudest moment at this very point in his life.
