Jose Antonio Vargas has told so many stories as a journalist and advocate for #undocumented persons living in America. Now the Pulitzer Prize winner takes on a new challenge as producer for #HereLiesLove, a Broadway production that opens in New York City on July 20.
The Filipino-American speaks with Jannelle So Perkins about how he first became acquainted with the play, which chronicles the rise and fall of the Marcos regime under Martial Law, and how he views working in theater as an extension of the creativity he has expressed as a writer. Vargas shares his experiences about working with Fil-Am A-listers like Lea Salonga and Bobby Lopez, and why now is the right time to bring this story to the biggest stage in theater.
Vargas also discusses the differences between authorship and ownership, and how a uniquely Filipino story can maintain its authenticity with non-Filipino writers.
