Celebrating APAIT’s 35th Year and Their Commitment to Serving the LGBTQ-IAS2+ Community

With over 35 years of serving the community, APAIT has certainly come a long way from where they started. APAIT, which originally stands for Asian Pacific Aids Intervention Team, began as an organization addressing the needs of Asians who were dying from HIV/AIDS. But over time, they have transformed to Access to Prevention Advocacy Intervention and Treatment extending their services not just to Asians, but also to communities of color.

Jury Candelario, Division Director of APAIT, enumerated services that they will continue to offer to those who identify as part of the LGBTQ-IA2S+community. Some of these are mental health services done by mental health professionals providing culturally appropriate treatment and counseling, recovery and support programs, and housing initiatives for underserved homeless individuals where comprehensive care can be addressed.

Karina Samala, one of the Board of Directors of APAIT, added that they also assist LGBTQ-IAS2+ individuals with unemployment and coping with their problems or past traumatic experiences such as lack of acceptance, growing up in the streets, and more. She mentioned that she is fortunate to live in a city that shares the same principles as the organization and supports them with their endeavors.
