The Mestizo LA: Wearing a Piece of Heritage

Traditional Filipino clothing such as the Filipiniana and the Barong Tagalog are usually worn during special and formal occasions. But with the evolution of time and fashion, here comes a heritage fashion brand called “The Mestizo LA” which features traditional Filipino pieces revived to contemporary wear. Founders Gil Gabriel Gonzales and Robert Kolosso discuss the birth of their brand and how they took a bold move to introduce traditional Filipino clothing to the American market.

It all started back in the Philippines when Gil thought of having Filipina wear as a complementary – pairing traditional clothing with jeans, shorts, or whatnot. Admittedly, it was a big risk for him, but his idea clicked, and he wanted to bring this vision to the U.S. Pandemic came and he shared his plans to Robert thinking that it was the perfect time to launch their own line. Hence, The Mestizo LA was born.

#TheMestizoLA showcases redesigned slim-tailored fit modern barongs and modern boleros with butterfly sleeves created with an intent to symbolize inclusivity. The patterns and hand-guided embroidery designs are brought from the Philippines and are beautifully and delicately made by artisans to keep its authenticity.

Despite their doubts and fears, they were determined to brave through their idea which led to positive reception from people with their masterpieces being sold out. With a promising future ahead, Gil and Robert aim that The Mestizo LA will become one of the retailers of Filipino wear in the U.S and continue their mission of bringing heritage through their timeless pieces.
