Maria Quiban on Love and Loss

Maria Quiban Whitesell, resident Morning meteorologist for #GoodDayLA and author of the new book, “You Can’t Do It Alone,” a book that provides guidance and thoughtful advice for anyone dealing with traumatic loss, bravely shared her experience with #SoJannelleTV.

Maria was born in Cebu, Philippines, immigrated to Hawaii at the tender age of 9 and became a staple in American television as a meteorologist. She retold stories of her fairy-tale-like journey with her husband, Sean, and the eventual calamity that hit their family.

During their trip to Paris, Maria noticed unusual behavior that Sean was exhibiting – he started to become alarmingly forgetful and chose to stay in. After their trip, Sean underwent routine tests and was diagnosed with Glioblastoma (GBM), a type of cancer in the brain or spinal cord. Eighteen months after his diagnosis, he passed away.

Having gone through the wringer, Maria is still standing proudly, choosing to find her happy moments in life. She mentioned that she promised her late husband to live her best life and give the best life to their son.
