Reviving Calado in Iloilo: The Philippines’ 19th-Century Textile Capital | So On-The-Go

In the 19th century, Iloilo was the Textile Capital of the Philippines, exporting world-class fabrics like Hablon, Piña, and Sinamay. But as imports and fast fashion took over, weaving declined. In the early 2000s, the Iloilo government and local communities started revival efforts, giving Hablon weaving renewed international recognition. Today, designers like Aisha and Jaki Peñalosa continue to showcase Hablon and Calado, bringing history back to life.
