Lynda Johnson: The First Filipina To Serve On The Cerritos City Council

In this newest episode of So Inspiring, we give the spotlight to Lynda Johnson, the first Filipina-American councilmember at the city of Cerritos. She talks about her genuine love for the city and her journey in public service.

Having lived in Cerritos since 1971, she witnessed it being underdeveloped –mostly just cow fields, a few shopping centers, and no city hall. But growing up and seeing it grow right before her eyes, she says that she’s proud of the city and what it has become. She basically never left and told herself that, ‘One day, I’m going to be mayor of this city’.

Her first involvement in public service occurred when she started becoming active in the Parent-Teacher Association in her children’s school. Through this experience, she was able to hone and develop her leadership skills, knowledge in governance, and participation in community service. Thereafter, she served as a board member of the ABC Unified School District from 2011 to 2017. In her professional career, she was field deputy to Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn and transitioned to being field deputy to Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva. In April 2022, she was then elected to the city council.

Lynda, who has been in Cerritos for 50 years, has no aspirations to go anywhere else. She aims to give the best that she can for the residents, to continue giving back to her community, and to recognize diversity and bring it into a higher level.
