The Influence of Filipino American Culture in Washington D.C

During our recent trip to the nation’s capital, to celebrate Filipino American History Month #FAHM – we sat down with Ryan Namata, National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA) Region Chair, who talked about Filipinos in Washington D.C. and neighboring communities.

When he first came to Washington D.C., he and his family wanted to strengthen the Filipino culture by influencing others with what they do and showing who they are. They came up with Filipino Independence Day parades and get-togethers which helped promote heritage in an even larger scale.

Ryan also shared that a lot of Filipinos in the NaFFAA capital were able to land jobs in education or federal governments. This led to the idea of opening Filipino restaurants, supermarkets, and more in the region. He also mentions what season is the best time to make a visit as well as delectables such as crabs, and ham that are a must-try when touring D.C.
