World Champion Nesthy Petecio lives her Olympic dream

After winning the gold at the 2019 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Russia, Nesthy Petecio is now on a mission to bring home an Olympic gold medal for the Philippines. The featherweight boxer joins her flyweight teammate Irish Magno as the first two female boxers the country has ever sent to the Olympics.

In an interview with #SoGame correspondent Ryan Songalia, Petecio shares how she started boxing with boys at a young age, as there were no girls to compete with. But despite defeating boys in a sport dominated by men, she still feels women were not given their due respect. Petecio intends to do something about it.

Beyond national pride, there’s a personal motivation for Petecio. The Olympics were not just her dream, but also that of her first trainer, her father, Teodoro, who first introduced her to boxing when she was 7 years old. Today, she hopes her dream of winning in the Olympics will come true.

Other Filipino boxers competing in the #TokyoOlympics are Eumir Marcial and Carlo Paalam. Cheer for our Philippine Boxing Team as they give their all, towards getting the gold medal in boxing for the Philippines! ??
